Once hiragana clicks, katakana (カタカナ) is your next unlock. Many learners delay it — but katakana shows up everywhere in modern Japan: restaurant menus, product names, train announcements, and even casual text messages.
If you're studying for the JLPT or planning to move to Japan, don't treat katakana as optional.
What katakana is used for
Katakana writes the same sounds as hiragana, but with different shapes. You'll see it for:
- Loanwords — コーヒー (coffee), コンピューター (computer), バス (bus)
- Foreign names — バングラデシュ (Bangladesh), トキョー (Tokyo)
- Emphasis — like italics in English
- Onomatopoeia — ドキドキ (heartbeat), ワンワン (woof)
In Bangladesh, you already know English loanwords. Katakana is often just those words written in Japanese syllables — which is why it can feel faster to learn than hiragana.
