NihongoHub Free Japanese Learning Resources: A Beginner’s Directory

A practical directory of NihongoHub’s free kana, kanji, grammar, quiz, numbers, pronunciation, and JLPT N5 study resources.

By NihongoHub Team

If you are starting Japanese, you do not need to open ten tabs and guess what to study next. This directory links the free public resources currently available on NihongoHub and puts them in a sensible order. The website is designed for beginners and learners building towards N5; the N5–N1 journey describes progression, not five complete courses available today.

Start with kana

Begin with Characters to inspect the hiragana and katakana grids, readings, and stroke order. Then practise recognition with the Kana Recognition quiz or reinforce recall with the untimed Kana Matching game. The guides Getting started with hiragana and Mastering katakana explain a small daily routine and common lookalikes.

Add useful words and grammar

Once kana feels familiar, use Japanese numbers and dates for counting, days, dates, and time expressions. Read Japanese pronunciation basics for mora timing, long vowels, and small っ, then practise the examples aloud. For sentence building, use the N5 grammar reference, Japanese particles for beginners, and Japanese for everyday life. Treat each page as a focused reference: choose two or three examples and make your own sentence.

Study kanji with the public map

The N5 and N4 Kanji Mind Map is free to browse without login. Use the N5/N4 tabs, select a sheet, and expand branches to inspect related components, meanings, readings, and example vocabulary. NihongoHub’s N5 and N4 collections are maintained study scopes, not official exhaustive JLPT lists. For exam expectations, consult the JLPT official level summary.

The map toolbar includes N5 and N4 PDF links, but PDF downloads require a verified email login. Email verification is not available yet, so a new PDF download cannot currently be completed. The public map remains available while that flow is prepared.

Check yourself with quizzes

Use the Quizzes hub for the available quiz catalogue. Kana practice is available through Kana Recognition and Kana Matching; the kanji activities have direct pages for Kanji Meaning, Kanji Reading, and Stroke Order. The Mixed Quiz is the timed Both-script mode inside Kana Recognition: choose Hiragana + Katakana and a 1, 3, or 5 minute session. Results show accuracy and missed items. When a timed run finishes, its best accuracy is automatically stored in this browser, and a challenge link can be shared with a friend for a score comparison. Community battles and rankings are upcoming.

Build an N5 routine

Use the JLPT N5 study plan to combine short blocks: kana or kanji review, one grammar pattern, a few words, and reading or listening practice. The N5 reading practice guide helps you work from short sentences towards longer passages. When you want to check exam format, use the official JLPT sample questions; NihongoHub quizzes are practice tools and do not award or predict an official JLPT result.

Keep the loop small: learn, retrieve, check, and write down one next review. Beginner learning on these public pages is free. A separate optional paid offer may be introduced around the new app launch; no launch date has been announced, so this directory does not treat that offer as required for today’s study.
